Maguey Melate
ABOUT:
Maguey Melate operates uniquely within the agave world—not as a single palenque or traditional brand, but as an independent bottler and a highly curated subscription service ("Mezcalero of the Month Club"). Founded on the philosophy of keeping agave spirits artisanal and acting as an opposing force to the "faster-cheaper" economy, they source extremely small-batch, uncertified Destilados de Agave directly from independent producer families across Mexico. By completely bypassing the expensive formal "Mezcal" certification board, they are able to work with rural, multi-generational maestros and pay them a premium, fair-trade rate. Because of this model, Maguey Melate does not have a static, permanent core lineup. Instead, their portfolio rotates constantly, releasing hyper-limited bi-monthly signature wooden boxes that highlight specific, often incredibly rare, single-batch expressions.

MEZCALS OFFERED:
Arroqueño (Semei García Ramos): A stunning example of their Oaxacan releases. Crafted in Miahuatlán by a young, ambitious master producer whose family has been making mezcal for generations. Distilled from the massive, slow-growing Arroqueño plant and aged in glass for six years before bottling, it boasts a deeply complex, refined profile showcasing profound earthiness, dark roasted agave, and a rich, long-lasting finish.
Guerrero & Michoacán Cupreata: Maguey Melate frequently ventures outside of Oaxaca to showcase the distinct, wild profiles of Agave cupreata. These batches are famously complex, often greeting the nose with wild, funky aromas of sharp cheese, fresh pine, and jalapeño. On the palate, they deliver a highly unique, savory journey filled with green pepper, deep lactic (creamy) notes, and a sharp, clean minerality.
Jalisco Ensambles (Raicilla-Style): Bottling from regions famous for Raicilla, these uncertified field blends offer a completely different terroir. A standout batch from Maestro Luis Velasco in Zapotitlan de Vadillo revealed a vibrant, dessert-like profile bursting with candied apples, sweet cream, brown sugar, and distinct notes of cracked pepper and celery bitters, elegantly skipping the heavy smoke of southern mezcals.
Hyper-Rare & Experimental Distillates: Maguey Melate is revered for bottling spirits that commercial brands simply won't touch. This includes highly unusual expressions like Destilado de Pulque (a spirit distilled directly from fermented agave sap, offering notes of sourdough starter, sweet yogurt, and buttery corn), or Pechuga de Mezontle (an infusion using roasted agave hearts that yields an incredibly dark, roasted, and sweet cocoa-driven palate). They also frequently explore other non-mezcal agave cousins, including regional Sotols, Bacanoras, and Tequilanas.
