Vago Mezcal

ABOUT:

Mezcal Vago's journey into the world of extraordinary mezcal begins in the remote mountains of Southern Oaxaca, seeking out small-batch mezcaleros who have been perfecting their artisanal and ancestral craft for generations.

The soul of Mezcal Vago is comprised of four different maestros mezcaleros and their families: Aquilino García López (whose sons Temo and Mateo continue the work), Salomón Rey Rodriguez ("Tío Rey"), Don Joel Barriga, and Don Emigdio Jarquín Ramirez.

Each maestro brings an independent style and a unique expression rooted in Oaxaca's rich cultural history, whether distilling in ollas de barro (clay pots) like Tío Rey, or using traditional methods and experimentation like the García family, known for Mezcal Vago Elote.

The brand's mission is to empower both the master craftsmen by celebrating their art and the drinker by providing the knowledge needed to appreciate this cherished gift of culture, labor, and incredible flavor.

MEZCALS OFFERED:

Mezcal Vago offers a selection of small-batch mezcals, each a unique expression crafted by four different maestro mezcaleros and their families in the remote mountains of Southern Oaxaca. These mezcals are rooted in local cultural traditions, utilizing both artisanal and ancestral methods, and are intended to empower both the master craftsmen and the drinker with knowledge of the art. The brand aims to provide connoisseur mezcal that is a cherished gift of culture, labor, and incredible flavor straight from the families who make them.

  • Elote: As corn and agave are the essence of rural Mexico, Elote honors the importance of both to our heritage, culture and daily life. Dried kernels of heirloom corn are toasted on a comal and placed in the still with Espadín to infuse its flavor during the second distillation. The result is a clear joven mezcal with a subtle Mexican corn flavor. The adding of another ingredient before final distillation is typical of a traditional celebration mezcal. Unique to our family, Elote is our celebration mezcal.

  • Espadín by Emigdio: Extra roasting time, terroir, and masterful skill gives Don Emigdio's Espadín a well-balanced smokiness with notes of cooked sugar, honey, mint, granite, and salt air.

  • Ensamble by Tío Rey: This mezcal is aged in American oak barrels, which gives it a richer, more complex flavor. It has notes of vanilla, caramel, and chocolate.
