For our next Central Valley Agave Club meeting, we will explore the complexity of extra anejo (XA) tequila and how they can intermingle with desserts. Extra Anejos are generally the most expensive variety of tequila for a reason. Aged over for three years or more in oak barrels, they take on much of the characteristics of the barrel while accentuating the contributions of the blanco spirit it starts with and the environment where it matures. For this tasting we will try three distinctly different XAs.
San Matia Gran Reserva Extra Anejo is a great entry-level XA that is easy to find and very affordable at around $50 a bottle. Sourced from Tachi Palace Liquor Store
Fuenteseca 5 year Extra Anejo extends the aging but in “very used” barrels to create very mellow sip while not overwhelming tastes of wood and leather. Sourced from San Francisco Tequila Shop
Tears of Llorona is widely considered setting the standard for what a good XA should be. It is often found on the top shelf of connoisseurs and fine tequila bars. This one is worth the price of admission alone! Sourced from Rozi’s Market and Liquor
Speaking of price: This was a much more expensive line-up of tequilas to purchase and share. We are also going to enjoy three small-portioned desserts paired with these samples. So the attendee share needs to be $40 per person just for this meeting. I hope you can appreciate the economics of bringing this experience and will join us despite this temporary price increase.
