Mezcal Real de 1950
ABOUT:
Mezcal Real de 1950 is an authentic, artisanal brand deeply rooted in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca—widely revered as the "World Capital of Mezcal." Backed by four generations of mezcaleros, the brand's history dates back to 1950 when Gregorio Santiago, son of Maestro Mezcalero Alvaro Santiago Jimenez, decided to create a label to honor his family's legacy. Operating under the belief that mezcal is a mystical elixir inextricably linked to Oaxacan life, food, and art, the Santiago family refuses to compromise their heritage for modern shortcuts. Their production process remains 100% artisanal and family-operated: mature agaves are slow-roasted in traditional underground conical wood-fired stone pits, crushed, naturally fermented, and distilled in small-batch copper pot stills. Real de 1950 aims to share the pure, unadulterated expression of their land and their family’s meticulous craftsmanship with the world stage.

MEZCALS OFFERED:
Joven: The brand’s unaged flagship expression (also referred to as Blanco or Plata), crafted from 100% Agave Espadín. This expression is designed to offer the purest translation of the agave plant. The nose features subtle floral notes and a delicate, welcoming sweetness mixed with light smoke. On the palate, it delivers a perfect balance of fresh Espadín flavor and complex minerality, offering a pleasant thickness and tension. It concludes with an appealing finish where sweet peachy notes beautifully carry the mineral character.
Reposado: A beautifully rested expression crafted from 100% Agave Espadín, aged for eight to ten months in white oak barrels. The barrel aging imparts a deep, woody complexity and a slightly bolder smoke profile than the Joven. The aroma is highly inviting, offering intensely smoky butterscotch and distinct candle wax notes. On the palate, it displays a weighty character layered with tar, warm heat, and rich forest-floor earthiness, culminating in a highly mineral-driven finish designed strictly to be sipped and savored slowly.
