Mezcal Oro de Oaxaca

ABOUT:

Mezcal Oro de Oaxaca is one of the most iconic, widely recognized, and ubiquitous mezcal brands in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Its history traces back to 1940 with Don José López Escobar, widely regarded during his era as one of the greatest maestro mezcaleros in the region. Sharing his dream to elevate and share the Oaxacan distillation industry, his family officially founded the Mezcal Oro de Oaxaca brand in 1985. Produced in Santiago Matatlán—a town in the central valleys famously heralded as the "world capital of mezcal"—the brand is deeply emblematic of old-school family tradition and authentic local culture. Oro de Oaxaca is famously celebrated for its approachability and remains an incredibly popular, everyday mezcal among native Oaxacans. Sticking to its classic roots, the brand proudly embraces the tradition of the maguey worm (gusano) and is widely recognized for packaging its bottles with a small bag of traditional worm salt, encouraging drinkers to experience the spirit exactly as the locals do.

MEZCALS OFFERED:

  • Joven con Gusano (Espadín): The brand’s beloved, flagship expression, crafted from 100% Agave Espadín and typically bottled between 38% and 40% ABV. Though technically classified as a Joven (unaged), it features a characteristic light golden hue. True to mid-century Oaxacan tradition, a real roasted maguey worm is added directly to the bottle, which imparts distinct, savory, and earthy undertones to the spirit. The aroma is robust and intensely smoky. On the palate, it is extremely rich, silky, and well-balanced, delivering a bold, smoky punch layered over warming heat, natural agave sweetness, and subtle hints of green pepper. It finishes long and smooth. Notably, each bottle is sold with a small pouch of sal de gusano (a traditional blend of sea salt, chile, and ground roasted maguey worms) tied to the neck, offering the quintessential, old-school Oaxacan tasting experience.
