Mezcal Mala Idea

ABOUT:

Mala Idea Mezcal (translating to "Bad Idea") was founded by Marcos Mendoza based on a bold, risky vision that led him to Oaxaca. The brand’s name is a heartfelt celebration of the men and women who courageously follow their passions, regardless of the challenges or the people who might call it a "bad idea." True to this adventurous spirit, the team goes to great lengths to seek out the absolute ripest and most mature agaves—from semi-cultivated Espadín to fiercely wild varieties found in rugged Oaxacan terrains. Operating with a deep respect for 400-year-old traditions, they handcraft their mezcals in micro-batches to guarantee exceptional quality. The process involves roasting agave hearts in earthen pit ovens over river rocks, crushing them with a 1.5-ton horse-drawn tahona wheel, utilizing a 90-to-118-hour open-air fermentation with wild ambient yeasts in traditional wooden vats, and finally distilling in vintage copper stills.

MEZCALS OFFERED:

  • Espadín Capón: The brand's foundational, small-batch expression, crafted from high-quality, semi-cultivated Agave Espadín. Utilizing the traditional "capón" method—where the flowering stalk of the agave is severed early to force the plant's remaining energy and sugars back into the heart—this spirit boasts a highly concentrated, pure profile that perfectly highlights the agave's sweet, roasted character.

  • Tobalá: A premium, award-winning expression crafted from the prized wild Agave Tobalá sourced from Santiago Matatlán. The aroma presents a beautiful mix of sweet honey and bright citrus fruits seamlessly blended with delicate hints of red pepper and green olives. On the palate, it is exceptionally creamy, delivering layered notes of sweet agave and soft spice that yield a highly elegant, terroir-driven tasting experience.

  • Cuishe: Handcrafted from the tall, wild Agave Cuishe, this expression offers a captivatingly savory and earthy profile. The nose is grounded by traditional roasted agave but quickly opens to reveal natural pine resin aromatics, distinct green olive notes, sweet minerals, and wet clay. The palate is bold, dry, and mineral-forward, offering complex layers of tobacco and dark bitter chocolate before concluding with a beautifully subtle, lingering smoke.

  • Añejo: A remarkably sophisticated expression of Espadín that spends a full 12 months resting in white oak barrels. This patient aging process imparts a brilliant amber hue and significantly softens the spirit. The aroma features roasted agave intertwined with honey, fine woods, and an elegant touch of smoke. On the palate, it is silky and well-structured, offering deep, warming flavors of fresh vanilla, toasted caramel, and delicate herbs, making it a truly luxurious sipping mezcal.
