Erstwhile Mezcal is a boutique importer of mezcal and agave spirits based in Brooklyn, New York. They are a social impact-driven company with a mission to advocate for small, independent, family-owned producers who lack representation outside their local communities in Mexico.

Erstwhile was founded in 2017 by Yuan and Kevin, two mezcal enthusiasts who were inspired by the traditional methods and culture of mezcal production. They believe that mezcal is a complex and nuanced spirit that deserves to be appreciated by a wider audience.

Yuan and Kevin met in Mexico while they were both studying abroad. They quickly bonded over their shared love of mezcal and their interest in social entrepreneurship. After returning to the United States, they decided to start Erstwhile Mezcal with the goal of bringing high-quality mezcal to the American market while also supporting the small-scale producers who make it.

Erstwhile Mezcal is committed to making a positive impact on the communities where their mezcal is produced. They work with their producers to ensure that they are paid fair wages and that their communities benefit from the mezcal trade.

Erstwhile also supports a number of social impact projects in Mexico. These projects include providing scholarships for children of mezcal producers, building schools and health clinics, and supporting environmental conservation efforts.

MEZCALS OFFERED:

Erstwhile Mezcal offers a variety of mezcals, each with its own unique flavor profile. Their portfolio includes mezcals made from different agave varieties, as well as mezcals that have been aged in different types of wood.

  • Erstwhile Espadín: This mezcal is made from the Espadín agave, which is the most common agave used for mezcal production. It has a smooth, balanced flavor with hints of smoke and fruit.

  • Erstwhile Tobala: This mezcal is made from the Tobala agave, which is a more rare and prized agave variety. It has a complex flavor with notes of smoke, herbs, and spices.
