El Tinieblo

ABOUT:

El Tinieblo is an ultra-premium, deeply sustainable artisanal mezcal brand with roots dating back to 1865. Hand-distilled in the state of Tamaulipas—a region less commonly seen in international mezcal markets compared to Oaxaca—the brand operates entirely from its sprawling 9,000-acre single-estate, Rancho El Tinieblo. Revived by the Pérez-Salinas family in 1986, El Tinieblo is a "seed-to-glass" operation. They are completely self-reliant, growing their agave without pesticides, and for every agave harvested, they plant 25 more. The ranch also doubles as an exotic wildlife sanctuary and conservation area. Adhering to traditional methods, their agaves are cooked over mesquite wood in stone-lined earthen pits, crushed by a mechanical tahona, naturally fermented in open-air wood vats, and double-distilled in copper. Distinctively, their core lineup is crafted from a unique proprietary blend of three wild and cultivated agaves: Agave salmiana, Agave americana, and Agave espadín.

MEZCALS OFFERED:

  • Joven: The brand's foundational, unaged flagship expression crafted from their signature blend of Salmiana, Americana, and Espadín agaves. Bottled at 40% ABV, it captures the raw, unmasked terroir of the Tamaulipas estate. The nose offers a complex, earthy bouquet of pine, morning dew, and sweet smoke. On the palate, it rewards the drinker with an expressive, evolving journey featuring bright herbal notes of sage and thyme, which gradually transition into a smooth finish accented by honey, raw wood, and a refined touch of tobacco.

  • Reposado: A beautifully crafted, rested expression that takes their signature three-agave blend and ages it for six to nine months in American white oak barrels that previously held bourbon. This careful maturation softens the spirit, bringing a rich, complex sweetness to the forefront. The traditional campfire smoke and earthiness are elegantly balanced by the barrel's influence, resulting in comforting notes of warm vanilla, gentle oak, and delicate hints of chamomile.

  • Añejo: The pinnacle of their aged lineup, this luxurious expression rests for up to two years in charred American white oak bourbon barrels. The extended contact with the wood imparts a rich, dark hue and a deeply concentrated flavor profile. It drinks almost like a fine whiskey, delivering intense, silky notes of bourbon, toasted caramel, and dark red fruits. The agave's natural earthiness perfectly intertwines with decadent layers of roasted coffee beans, cacao, and a warm, lingering cigar smoke finish.
