Bruxo Mezcal
ABOUT:
Bruxo Mezcal (derived from "brujo," meaning shaman or wizard) was established in 2010 by a group of friends from Mexico City after a life-changing trip to the mountains of Oaxaca. Built on the philosophy of honoring the mysticism and magic of the spirit, Bruxo operates as a collective rather than a single palenque. They partner with multiple independent maestro mezcaleros across different Oaxacan villages—such as San Dionisio Ocotepec and San Agustín Amatengo—allowing the brand to showcase a diverse range of local terroirs and ancestral techniques. Production strictly adheres to the traditional Artesanal classification: mature agaves are slow-roasted in underground conical stone pits for three to seven days, crushed by a heavy stone tahona, naturally fermented, and double-distilled in copper pot stills. To make exploring their portfolio accessible, Bruxo organizes their core premium line by numbers, guiding the drinker through increasingly rare and complex agave varietals.

MEZCALS OFFERED:
Bruxo X: Designed as an approachable, highly versatile entry point into the brand. It is a unique post-distillation blend of 80% Espadín and 20% wild Barril agaves. Bottled at 40% ABV, it offers a remarkably gentle, low-smoke profile. The nose is delicate with bright floral and citrus notes, leading to a sweet palate filled with hints of chamomile, light honey, and fruit, culminating in a clean, mineral finish.
Bruxo No. 1 (Espadín): The brand's foundational, single-agave expression crafted from 100% cultivated Espadín. It delivers a classic Oaxacan flavor profile that balances a slightly floral aroma with robust, traditional smoky tones. On the palate, it rewards the drinker with a vibrant mix of citrus and black pepper, elegantly finished with a light touch of warming cinnamon.
Bruxo No. 2 (Pecho / Abocado): A fascinating, deeply traditional expression crafted from a blend of 80% Espadín and 20% Barril. What makes this mezcal entirely unique is that it is abocado (macerated) with a roasted agave heart after distillation. This specialized process imparts a beautifully sweet, herbal aroma filled with citrus, fennel, and fresh mint, while yielding an exceptionally rich and velvety mouthfeel.
Bruxo No. 3 (Barril): Distilled entirely from the wild, stalk-like Agave karwinskii (Barril), this expression perfectly captures the dry, structured essence of the wild plant. It greets the senses with deep earthy minerality and distinct notes of warm nutmeg. The tasting journey is complex and savory, subtly evolving to reveal an unexpected, refreshing hint of sweet melon on the finish.
Bruxo No. 4 (Ensamble): A masterful, complex field blend showcasing the harmony of three distinct agaves: 60% wild Cuishe, 30% wild Barril, and 10% Espadín. This expertly crafted ensamble highlights intense, herbaceous flavors. The nose is distinctly unique with aromas of roasted peanut seeds and bright florals, while the palate delivers vibrant, tropical bursts of fresh pineapple and crisp citrus.
Bruxo No. 5 (Tobalá): The crown jewel of their core lineup, distilled from 100% wild Tobalá agave grown in high-altitude rocky soils. Because this small, rosette-shaped agave is notoriously difficult to yield, production is highly limited. It presents a rich, luxurious, and completely unique aroma of brown butter. The flavor is impeccably balanced and sweet, leaving an ethereal, lingering aftertaste of fresh peaches and ripe quince.
